Alabama point guard Jahvon Quinerly announces transfer destination
Alabama point guard Jahvon Quinerly has found a new home. The now-former Crimson Tide veteran announced on Thursday that he has committed to Memphis after entering the transfer portal back on June 25. Quinerly has one more season of collegiate eligibility remaining.
“I can’t say enough about Alabama Basketball,” Quinerly said last month. “My team, the staff and all my Bama fans have been the greatest. You have embraced me and treated me like gold since day one. The relationships I’ve built have gone way beyond basketball and that’s something that has made my decision to enter the transfer portal so difficult for me.
“My basketball journey has been something that any student-athlete could only dream about. It has definitely come with its share of ups and downs but I was very fortunate to have such a beautiful support system to help me through some of my difficult moments and I think that’s what’s making this message so emotional but also so exciting to share with everyone.
“Part of my journey is taking risks and following my heart. Sometimes as time goes on, we know it’s time to move on, take risks and follow our heart. But this is truly a bittersweet moment for me. In my time here, we have set records together, won championships together and we have made program history together… Thank you Bama Nation. FOREVER. FOR EVERYTHING.”
Quinerly returned for his senior year after suffering a torn ACL in the 2022 NCAA Tournament and saw his first game action less than eight months after his setback. The Hackensack, N.J., native appeared in 35 of the Tide’s 37 games last season and started the final six contests, all in the postseason. Quinerly averaged 8.5 points and 3.6 assists per game in 2022-23.
The SEC Co-Sixth Man of the Year, Quinerly scored in double figures in eight of Alabama’s final nine games, including a season-high 24 points in an overtime win over Auburn, and was named to the SEC All-Tournament Team after making his first three starts of the season. He has played in 96 games in the last three years and averaged 11.8 points and 3.7 assists per game.
Quinerly is the third Crimson Tide men’s basketball player to enter the transfer portal following the 2022-23 season, joining guards Nimari Burnett and Jaden Bradley. In addition to the portal entries, Alabama also lost three players to the NBA (Brandon Miller, Noah Clowney, Charles Bediako) and two seniors that exhausted their eligibility (Noah Gurley, Dom Welch).
With Quinerly’s decision to enter the portal, the Tide is left with 12 scholarship players with Davin Cosby, Rylan Griffen, Nick Pringle and Mark Sears returning and Mouhamed Dioubate, Aaron Estrada, Grant Nelson, Kris Parker, Jarin Stevenson, Mohamed Wague, Sam Walters and Latrell Wrightsell Jr. joining the Alabama program from high school/the portal.
Established in October of 2018, the NCAA’s transfer portal allows collegiate student-athletes to merely enter their name into an online database and wait for collegiate teams to contact them. It is also worth noting that players can withdraw their names from the transfer portal, as well.
