Alabama Pregame Show: Simpson enters Heisman race | Defense v. Diego Pavia, Round 2

Alabama claimed a huge road win over Georgia last weekend, as the Crimson Tide snapped the Bulldogs’ 33-game home winning streak. Alabama got another strong showing from quarterback Ty Simpson, as he threw for 276 yards and two touchdowns in his first SEC start.

With his performance, Simpson now has the third-best odds to win the Heisman Trophy after the first month of the 2025 football season. Simpson (+1,000) trails only Oregon quarterback Dante Moore (+725) and Miami quarterback Carson Beck (+900) have higher chances.

Simpson will need to keep his recent play rolling as Alabama navigates deeper into SEC play. A home game against Vanderbilt will be no pushover, as the Commodores enter the Week 6 game with an undefeated, 5-0 (1-0 SEC) record and 14 sacks through their first five contests.

The Tide was, of course, in a similar spot last season after a big win over Georgia, only to lose the following week at Vanderbilt, 40-35. Alabama will look to avoid a similar letdown with the ‘Dores and quarterback Diego Pavia coming to town. So far this season, Pavia is completing nearly 75% of his passes while also leading the Vanderbilt offense in rushing.

UA will need to not only pressure but also contain Pavia on Saturday, and its defensive front will be down a few players. Wolf linebackers Qua Russaw (foot) and Jah-Marien Latham (neck) are both out, while defensive tackle James Smith will have to miss the first half of action.
