The month of November is here, which means the College Football Playoff is getting closer by the day. On Tuesday night, the selection committee released their first batch of CFP rankings, with Alabama coming in at No. 4.

This ranking would place the Crimson Tide (7-1, 5-0 SEC) in the field if the playoff started today, receiving a first round bye along with the other top four seeds. Alabama would face the winner of No. 5 Georgia and unranked (No. 12 seed) Memphis in the quarterfinals.

The Crimson Tide boasts one of the strongest resumes in the country so far this season. Alabama has wins over four teams ranked in the committee’s top 25: No. 5 Georgia, No. 16 Vanderbilt, No. 22 Missouri and No. 25 Tennessee. It has one remaining game against a ranked opponent: No. 12 Oklahoma in two weeks.

This is the second year of the 12-team playoff, and the automatic qualifier rules have remained the same. The five highest ranked conference champions are guaranteed a spot in the field at season’s end, including the Power Four conferences and the highest ranked champion from a Group of Five conference.

The biggest change to the format this season is that first round byes are not exclusive to conference champions. As opposed to the top four teams with automatic bids receiving a first round bye, now the top four seeds as ranked by the committee will be the ones that receive a bye to the quarterfinal round.

The committee will continue to release updated rankings every Tuesday night until conference championship week. The final rankings will be released during the CFP selection show on the morning of Sunday, Dec. 7.

Alabama’s next game is a home tilt with LSU this Saturday night (6:30 p.m. CT, ABC).
