A-Day standouts – RB Justice Haynes

There’s no denying the Crimson team struggled to run the football. The White team (first-team offense) running backs totaled a solid 71 yards on just 13 carries (good for a 5.5-yard average). On the other side, the second-team offense only saw its backs total 51 yards on 19 carries (a 2.7-yard average).

Most of those struggles were the result of the offensive line though.

I thought both Haynes and Jamarion Miller ran hard, even if it didn’t lead to significant yardage production. Haynes still found a way to impress though. He ran in two short-yardage touchdowns, which is encouraging considering that’s been a recent area of weakness. Equally as important, he brought in four catches for 40 yards and a third touchdown.

The top-40 freshman is the complete package. He brings a power element, but he’s also an intelligent runner who doesn’t rely too much on that power. He’s reliable enough in pass protection, and he can be a volume option in the passing game. Nick Saban couldn’t say enough good things about him following the scrimmage.

“Justice is a really good player,” Saban told reporters. “He had a great spring. He’s got great maturity about him. You wouldn’t know he was a freshman if you didn’t know better. Nothing is too big for him in terms of learning, going out and executing. He’s not intimidated by anything.

“The guy’s got toughness. He can run behind his pads. He’s got good speed. He’s a good receiver. He can make you miss. So I think he’s got a really bright future, and I think he will contribute to the team this year.”
