Commitment Breakdown: What Alabama is getting in four-star QB Jett Thomalla

The big news to kick off the final week before the summer dead period is Jett Thomalla, No. 10 quarterback from Millard South High School in Omaha, Nebraska, flipping his commitment from Iowa State to Alabama. Thomalla had an outstanding junior season and helped lead his team to a state championship. He also shined during the spring earning an invite to the Elite 11.
BOL previously spoke with Thomalla’s head coach, Taylor Mendenhall, after Thomalla received an offer from Alabama last month. Thomalla completed 250-of-359 attempts (69.6%) for 3,663 yards with 47 touchdowns and three interceptions during the 2024 season.
“He’s somebody who can throw the ball at any arm angle, make any throw, put the ball on the money on the move or in the pocket,” Mendenhall said. “What gets overlooked a lot of times is his athleticism. He doesn’t run the ball for us because we don’t need him to, but I think one thing that helped him pick up some traction was these highlight films of him dunking all season this winter.
“There were concerns after his sophomore season if he could move or if he could jump, and those were kind of put to rest on the basketball court.”

National experts
Thomalla had an outstanding performance at the Elite 11 regional in Nashville earlier this spring. The performance earned an invite to the Elite 11 final in Los Angeles (Tuesday-Thursday). He saw a rise in his overall ranking via On3 from No. 196 to No. 123 overall after the initial in-person evaluation. Thomalla is the No. 10 QB per On3 and may have a chance to rise even higher after competing with the top signal callers in the country this week.
“Thomalla had an excellent performance during his Elite 11 workout showing that he can generate high RPMs on the football and rip it from multiple arm slots. His ability to manipulate the football even when working off-platform was quite impressive. He has the frame, quality athletic ability and arm talent to develop into one of the top rising senior signal callers in the country. If he can continue to improve his lower-half mechanics and develop physically he should have quite a strong senior season.” –Cody Bellaire, On3 National Scout
“We were looking forward to getting an in-person evaluation of Jett Thomalla, who has been a steady riser in recent rankings updates. Thomalla had one of the bigger and more projectable frames of the quarterbacks in attendance. He showed easy arm strength, not having to strain to generate velocity on his throws. Thomalla does a lot of his damage on Friday nights inside the pocket, but is an explosive athlete on the basketball court. We thought he moved pretty well in drills. There is room to add refinement to his game, but the physical tools were apparent.” -Charles Power, On3 National Rankings Director
