Ezavier “EJ” Crowell, a five-star running back from Jackson High School in Alabama, had a week he’ll never forget. The Crimson Tide signee was named the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year on Thursday morning and, by mid-afternoon, helped lead his team to a second consecutive Class 4A state championship.

In his final high school game before enrolling at Alabama on Jan. 5, Crowell delivered a dominant performance: 25 carries for 304 yards and five touchdowns in a 52–0 win over previously undefeated Anniston, a team allowing just 11 points per game entering the matchup. He was unsurprisingly named MVP of the title game.

The nation’s No. 2 running back finished his senior season as the state’s leading rusher with 2,606 yards (12.8 yards per carry) and 35 touchdowns. His career totals across three seasons (after reclassifying last January): 6,329 rushing yards, 91 rushing touchdowns, and 508 receiving yards with six additional scores.

Crowell announced his long-anticipated commitment to Alabama on June 26. He officially visited Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, and Texas before choosing the Crimson Tide and attended every home game in Tuscaloosa this fall. He also traveled to Athens for the Sept. 28 Alabama–UGA game as a guest of the Bulldogs, though his recruitment was never in doubt.

“I grew up watching Alabama since I was a little kid,” Crowell told On3. “Alabama was my dream school. … Since they offered me as a freshman, I have been thinking about this. I have known for a while that Alabama is where I wanted to go.”

“I have been watching Derrick HenryMark IngramTrent RichardsonTJ Yeldon and Josh Jacobs play at Alabama. They know how to get running backs to the NFL. Those were some of the greats, and I have watched them make a lot of plays at Alabama. That is what I plan to do.”

The state’s top recruit per Rivals and the Rivals Industry Player Rankings is widely viewed as a potential early-impact player for the Crimson Tide. He was one of 22 signees for Alabama during the Early Signing Period.

“Some guys can put up numbers, and it’s who they’re playing and things like that,” Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer said Wednesday. “He makes plays, and he can break tackles in small areas. He can run you over. … He’s got that finishing speed, too. As a big kid, I’m really excited about how he’s gonna come in.”

Crowell is one of two running back signees in the class, joined by late addition Traeshawn Brown of Huntsville, Texas. The No. 19 overall player in the newly released Rivals250, Crowell is the highest-ranked signee in Alabama’s 2026 class.
