After playing high-major competition in six of its last seven games, No. 12 Alabama basketball finally gets a break in the schedule on Sunday afternoon as it hosts UTSA, only its second buy game of the season.

The Roadrunners are led by former Alabama assistant Austin Claunch, who’s in his second year coaching the program. Claunch left a head coaching position at Nicholls following the 2022-23 season to join Nate Oats‘ staff in Tuscaloosa, where in his lone season with the program he helped the Crimson Tide make its first-ever Final Four in 2024.

Claunch left Alabama the following month to take the head coaching job at UTSA, where he went 12-19 (6-12 AAC) in his first season. He’s led the team to a 4-4 start to begin his second campaign, currently with two wins over Division-I programs. The team’s leading scorer, Jamir Simpson, is averaging over 18 points per game and was All-WAC second team at Southern Utah last season.

UTSA is the second-lowest rated team on Alabama’s schedule according to KenPom, who has the Roadrunners ranked outside of the top-250 nationally. The only opponent ranked lower is North Dakota, who the Tide beat 91-62 in the season-opener.

Tipoff between Alabama and UTSA is set for 1 p.m. CT.
