TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama’s tight end room might be one of the thinnest on the roster.

And that was before Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer announced after Monday’s first practice that Danny Lewis would be out for the entire spring season due to injury.

Alabama has to replace both starters from last year’s team, CJ Dippre and Robbie Ouzts, and lost another depth piece, Ty Lockwood, to the transfer portal. Only three tight ends from UA’s 2024 team are back, and one of those is Lewis. The others are Josh Cuevas, who played in all 13 games after transferring from Washington, and Jay Lindsey, who redshirted.

The Crimson Tide did add some pieces this offseason. It signed Kaleb Edwards and Marshall Pritchett as part of its No. 3 recruiting class for the 2025 cycle. But Edwards won’t enroll until the summer, and Pritchett suffered an injury in the Under Armour All-America Game. UA also added transfers Peter Knudson (Weber State) and Jaylen Hobson (South Alabama).

But DeBoer agreed, Alabama is “certainly” thin at tight end at the start of spring ball.

“We’ve got some belief, and we love what Josh Cuevas can do,” DeBoer said. “As far as numbers and guys that have a lot of experience, we certainly are thin there.

“We expect Danny (to be back) by the summer to be back and rolling. He knows our system. It’s just a matter of the progress we want to see him make. Getting the reps that would’ve been his. It’s unfortunate that he has his injury, something, again, going back to last fall during the season, but there’s some other guys who are going to hop in there.

“You’ve got Jay, and you’ve got Peter, who came in, and just some other guys who are taking a good chance to take advantage, and they get to develop, too. We’re going to need them this fall when the season hits.”

Alabama will return to the practice field on Wednesday, March 5, for spring workout No. 2.
