Alabama received some negative injury news late yesterday afternoon as head coach Kalen DeBoer announced that sixth-year senior linebacker Jah-Marien Latham had sustained a neck injury and was taken to UAB St. Vincent’s hospital in Birmingham or evaluation.

During the weekly SEC coaches teleconference on Wednesday morning, DeBoer provided an addition update on Latham’s status after a night of care.

“One thing I want to note, I know I put a statement out last night. Jah-Marien Latham, to follow up on that, he’s at UAB just continuing to get evaluated,” DeBoer said. “We’ll probably know more here in the next 48 hours. Most importantly, he’s got motion, feeling. Just texted with him this morning and he told me to tell the guys he’s doing well. Just more tests, more things we’ve got to evaluate, but that’s the latest on him.”

Latham is an outside linebacker that primarily plays the ‘Wolf’ position on Alabama’s defense, also rotating at ‘Bandit’ and occasionally along the defensive line. He’s one of two outside linebackers that have started games for the Crimson Tide this year alongside redshirt sophomore Qua Russaw.

With Latham unavailable, Alabama is down to just four players at the Wolf spot in Russaw, redshirt sophomore Yhonzae Pierre, redshirt freshman Noah Carter and true freshman Justin Hill. Of the four, Russaw and Pierre have seen plenty of meaningful snaps already this season as Latham has already missed time with a separate injury.

Both Russaw and Pierre recorded a sack in Alabama’s last matchup against Wisconsin, and will be heavily relied on in this weekend’s matchup against Georgia.

“Those guys are heavily involved already, just being on the football field and the number of reps become more clear to them. They always practice hard and I expect that to continue to be the case,” DeBoer said. “We’ve just got to make sure we continue to build that depth, not just in that room, but at all the spots that Jah-Marien plays. It’s unfortunate, but it’s an opportunity for these guys to step up and continue to improve themselves and our football team.”
