Kalen DeBoer shuts down being linked to Penn State job opening

Penn State fired head coach James Franklin nearly two months ago, on October 12, and has yet to hire a replacement. Other Power Four jobs across the country are being filled, and those openings occurred after the Nittany Lions moved on from Franklin after 12 seasons.

As the Penn State job sits vacant, some have brought up Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer as a potential target in the Nittany Lions’ search. Some pundits, whether reputable or not, have also hypothesized that DeBoer and/or his family are not happy in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

DeBoer was asked about that on Thursday ahead of the SEC Championship Game.

“We’re extremely happy at Alabama,” DeBoer said on Thursday. “… We’re extremely happy here. Love the challenge, love the grind, love this place. And there’s never been any link. There’s never been any conversation. There’s never been any interest either way. 

“And so, I’m glad we can put that to bed right now.”

DeBoer is in Year 2 at Alabama, after choosing to leave Washington and replace Nick Saban as the head coach of the Crimson Tide. He has posted a 19-6 record thus far and has Alabama in the SEC Championship Game in his second season. In addition to the game results, DeBoer is recruiting at a high level, signing the No. 3 and No. 6 classes in 2025 and 2026.

“I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished,” said DeBoer on his Wednesday radio show. “The message right now with the team and what they choose to be their theme is the job’s not done, because as much as we’ve accomplished, there’s more that we know we want to go after and go get. That’s this team’s expectation, that’s this program’s expectation. 

“We’ve never wavered from and shied away from any of those expectations that you have here at Alabama.”
