What Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz said about upcoming matchup with Alabama

No. 8 Alabama is getting ready to face a third straight ranked opponent. The Crimson Tide will be on the road this week, taking on No. 14 Missouri (5-0, 1-0 SEC) in Columbia. The game will kick off at 11 a.m. CT and will air on ABC.
On Wednesday morning, Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz joined the weekly SEC coaches teleconference to share his thoughts ahead of this weekend’s game.
Here’s everything he said about facing Alabama:
Condolences to family of Mark Womack…
“Mark was an outstanding ambassador for the SEC and a great man. I fondly remember him encouraging me throughout my time, especially my first three years here. Just encouraged me with the progress of our team. He always would joke with me, because I was mad my first year, with COVID, I blamed him for scheduling LSU and Alabama in my first three weeks. When we beat LSU he called me on Sunday and said, ‘Hey, am I gonna get some thank yous? Because I scheduled your first win at the University of Missouri.’ Just wanted to say how special of a person Mark Womack was. I think it’s fitting that we’re playing Alabama this week. I know he was an Alabama grad.”

On time of possession…
“I think it’s is a byproduct of a lot of different things. I think time of possession is execution of third downs, being able to stay on the field. I think it’s your defense’s ability to force three-and-outs. We’ve had three opponents that we were able to pretty much overwhelm on the defensive side of the ball, which has skewed the statistics of our team. We understand that this is gonna be a totally different style of game, totally different matchup. We’re not relying on that to be a focal point for the game. What the focal point for the game is gonna be is our ability to stay on the field on third downs, which we were not able to do last year. Get off the field on third downs against a quarterback who’s playing at as a high a level as there is in the country.”
On the game against Alabama in 2020…
“I think about that game, that might have been one of the best Alabama teams of all-time. I mean, Jaylen Waddle, DeVonta Smith, Mac was the quarterback. I can’t even think about all the defensive players they had just choking us out. That was a good team, that was a good football team.”
