The Los Angeles Chargers took former Auburn wide receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith in the fifth round of this past April’s NFL Draft.

He’s already showing Chargers fans what Auburn fans became accustomed to for one season.

Lambert-Smith transferred to Auburn from Penn State ahead of his final year of eligibility and instantly became an impact player. He nearly became the third player in Auburn history to reach 1,000 yards receiving in a season, with 981 yards on 50 receptions and eight touchdowns in his lone season as a Tiger.

Coleman still in touch

Aside from taking over the offense as the top receiver, Lambert-Smith also assumed an important veteran role. He became a leader for a group of young wide receivers playing valuable minutes, including Cam Coleman.

“I really look up to KeAndre because of the way he approaches the game,” Coleman said. “The way he takes care of his body, the way he does everything with a serious mindset. I look up to KeAndre.”

While Coleman goes through his second fall camp with Auburn, Lambert-Smith is going through his first camp with the Chargers.

“I texted him the other day and told him the deep balls he’s been catching, I taught him that,” Coleman said.

KLS makes pro debut

Lambert-Smith took the field Thursday night in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio.

In the preseason game between the Chargers and Lions, Lambert-Smith was the same “big play Dre” that he was for Auburn. The rookie had a 28-yard reception in the first quarter on third down to keep the Chargers’ drive alive. Los Angeles would go on to miss a field goal.

Late in the second quarter, Lambert-Smith found the end zone on a 15-yard reception from Trey Lance. He finished the night with two receptions for a team-leading 43 yards receiving and one touchdown.
