Auburn will be without one of its starting wide receivers going forward.

Head coach Hugh Freeze announced on the SEC teleconference Wednesday that Horatio Fields broke his foot in practice Tuesday.

“Unfortunately, he broke his foot and is going to have to have surgery (Thursday),” said AU coach Hugh Freeze. “That’s a huge loss for us. Kinda the leader of that receiver room that knew every position and gave us flexibility to do a lot of things.”

Fields, who transferred to Auburn this offseason after spending the previous four seasons at Wake Forest, is third in receiving yardage on Auburn’s roster. In five games this season, he had 12 receptions for 106 yards and one touchdown.

Sophomore Perry Thompson and true freshman Sam Turner are the next in line to step up for Auburn.

“I think next man up is Perry Thompson,” said Freeze. “It’s his time to show he’s ready and to earn it. Obviously, we’re getting Sam (Turner) prepared too, to help. Perry has the potential and talent to do really good things. He’s got to learn to do them consistently over and over again, and with technique. He shows flashes of that and now we just need it to be more consistent. But he’ll be the first one to get that opportunity.”

Thompson has two receptions this season for 11 yards, while Turner is still looking for his first career reception.

Auburn takes on No. 9 Texas A&M Saturday, with kickoff set for 2:30 p.m. CST.
