5-star Gators commit LJ McCray continues to rise with On3

Florida commit LJ McCray was already a 5-star prospect and On3’s No. 1-ranked defensive lineman, but now the 2024 prospect has unlocked another elite status.
On Monday, the Daytona Beach (Fla.) Mainland defender climbed to No. 3 overall in the updated On300 rankings. He was previously slotted at No. 8 and is still the No. 2-ranked senior in Florida, trailing only Ohio State wide receiver commit Jeremiah Smith.
As a senior for the 11-1 Buccaneers, McCray has racked up 59 tackles (40 solo), 29 tackles for loss, nine sacks, two forced fumbles, two pass deflections, one interception and a fumble recovery.
When you consider that success, Mainland’s competition level and McCray’s physical makeup at 6-foot-6, 275 pounds, it’s no surprise On3 is extremely high on him.
Additional schools still in pursuit of the Gators commit include Florida State and Miami.
On Friday, McCray and Mainland have a home playoff game against 9-2 Sebring.

Measured in at over 6-foot-6, 260 pounds prior to his senior season. Has outstanding length and a large frame. Arms check in at 34.75 inches, with hands measuring 10.5 inches.
McCray lines up as a big defensive end on Friday nights. Shows upside as a pass rusher, using first-step quickness to get into the backfield. Has high-end closing speed for a player of his size.
Plays with a very encouraging level of physicality. Bullies offensive linemen on contact and finishes plays with violence. Works to get off blocks with vigor. Also sees time as a tight end.
McCray can continue honing his technical skill as he fills out and grows into his body. — On3 Director of Scouting and Rankings Charles Power
