One of the nation’s elite running backs says he is spending his Saturday evening in Gainesville.

Richard Young, who is committed to Alabama, will be in attendance for the Gators’ season opener against Utah; however, much of that is due to a former teammate being on the roster.

That former Lehigh Acres (Fla.) standout is freshman wide receiver, Alex Gonzales, who joined the program over the summer as a preferred walk-on.

“I will be at the UF game today supporting my former teammate but still locked in on Bama !!!” Young tweeted on Saturday morning.

Since the beginning of this year, Young has made his way to Florida on multiple occasions. He visited the Gators a pair of times in 2021 as well. Leaving the Sunshine State for college was always the most-likely scenario, but UF was arguably the most consistent in-state contender.

Prior to committing to the Crimson Tide in late July, Young trimmed his list to Alabama, Georgia and Oregon. All three schools received an official visit during the month of July.

In addition to the aforementioned schools, Young reeled in offers from Ohio State, Oklahoma, Miami, Clemson, Texas, LSU and Texas A&M among many others.

“It felt like home that same day I went back for my official visit. I love it there,” Young previously said of the Crimson Tide.

According to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, Young ranks as the No. 2 running back and No. 33 prospect regardless of position.

Scouting Report on Richard Young

Physically-developed running back who emerged as a national name as a high school underclassman. Has a good combination of play speed and power. Has a muscular upper body with room to add mass in his lower half. Uses his leg drive to run through tackles at the second level.

Shows well above average speed, which is validated by his track times (around 11.1 seconds in the 100 meters). Productive as a junior, rushing for 1,755 yards and 19 touchdowns while averaging nine yards per carry. Will need to considerably improve his ball skills as a receiver out of the backfield, as he has a tendency to fight the ball.

Most of his best track times came as a high school underclassman. Older for the class, turning 18 years old in the spring of his junior year. — On3 Director of Scouting and Rankings Charles Power
