GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida Gators punter Jeremy Crawshaw was named Wuerffel Man of the Month.

The honor is given monthly to “a football scholar-athlete that exemplifies the Gator Standard, demonstrating holistic excellence in leadership, character, service, and academics.” The distinction is not an on-field achievement, but rather one about the character of the player.

Crawshaw has a big leg and an even bigger personality. The Australian native left his parent’s home of Emu Plains to head to Pro Kick Australia. There, Crawshaw worked as well as prepared to potentially earn a scholarship to college in America.

Pro Kick Australia was developed in 2007 to train, guide and transition Australian athletes to perform at the College / NFL level. Pro Kick Australia touts $45,000,000 saved in education fees, 190 full-ride scholarships, six Ray Guy Awards, two National Champions, 15 NFL/CFL contracts, and a Super Bowl winner.

Crawshaw steps up as a leader for the Gators

It’s not often that a punter is looked to as a leader in a locker room. That isn’t the case in Gainesville. Crawshaw is on Florida’s leadership committee and spoke to the team last month.

“During the off-season, Coach Napier, we have the leadership team each week. Each Tuesday, and Thursday, somebody from the leadership team had to step up and talk about a word,” Crawshaw explained. “Mine was ownership. I chose to talk about the All Blacks rugby team. One of the things they say is better men make better All Blacks (the New Zealand National Rugy team).

“So the All Blacks are the most successful sporting team in history. I bet you guys didn’t actually know that. But, yeah, I chose to speak on that because, if you can show up, if you can have integrity, if you can stand up to your own word outside of here, you say, ‘Yeah, I’ll help you, I’ll do this, I’ll do that, outside of football, you can bring it in here.’ You’ve already got that characteristic in here. I believe that I try to be the best man that I can be every day, and I hope that translates into football. I hope a lot of people can see that. But I definitely strive to be a good man all around.”

The Wuerffel Man of the Month tradition was introduced in April. Outside linebacker Chief Borders earned the first recognition. Long snapper Marco Ortiz earned the second honor and offensive tackle Michael Tarquin was recognized in May. Nay’Quan Wright was the July recipient. Linebacker Ventrell Miller was the most recent recipient.
