The preseason accolades are stacking up for Florida Gators redshirt senior offensive center Jake Slaughter. He was tabbed as one of the top centers, if not the top center in the sport last season, and could have been a high-round NFL Draft pick after last season. That decision led to more recognition this preseason ahead of his final year at the collegiate level. Slaughter’s latest achievement came on Wednesday when he was named a First Team All-American by CBS Sports.

Florida’s talented lineman is primed for a huge season

This lateset preseason accolade is the latest on a growing list of praise for Jake Slaughter. He’s already found his name on the preseason watch list for the Rimington Trophy, Lombardi Award, and Outland Trophy. Furthermore, Slaughter also made the Sporting News and ESPN Preseason All-American First Team list.

The best players are known for their talent, but the truly elite ones make their teammates better. That’s a trait that Florida head coach Billy Napier praises the most when speaking about his prized lineman.

“I love Jake because he makes everyone around him better,” UF coach Billy Napier said during Fall Camp. “I think that’s his No. 1 most admirable trait in my opinion — his ability to elevate others around him and how they play and how they live.”

Last season, Slaughter started all 13 games, logging more snaps than anyone else on Florida’s offensive line. Pro Football Focus graded him as the Gators’ top performer in both pass protection and run blocking, and by season’s end, he was a consensus All-American. All of the notoriety that Slaughter has received this year is something Napier thinks is well deserved.

“He has earned every single thing that he has gotten,” Napier said. “He is the absolute top leader on our team and sets the tone and the pace every day.”
