On Thursday afternoon, Gators wide receiver Caleb Douglas earned a spot on the award watch list for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce and SPORTyler announced.

During his freshman season at Florida, Douglas started in three of the eight games he appeared in, reeling in 10 receptions for 175 yards with two touchdowns. His start against the Gamecocks marked the first time a Gators freshman wide receiver started a game since Kadarius Toney did against LSU in 2017.

The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity; specifically, tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.

In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or currently playing at Texas D1 four-year college.

The watch list will be trimmed to 16 semifinalists in November and then to five finalists in December. They will be selected by broadcasters, commentators, journalists, fans and previous winners. Those finalists will also be in Tyler for The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Banquet, which is scheduled for Jan. 10, 2024.

Douglas’ appearance on the watch list is the seventh among Florida players this preseason.

Douglas is a breakout candidate for the 2023 season

A former four-star prospect during the 2022 cycle, the 6-foot-3, 180-pound Douglas committed to the Gators over additional offers from LSU, USC, the school he was previously committed to, Texas, Notre Dame and Baylor.

Now, the product of Missouri City (Texas) Hightower is projected to start his true sophomore season.

“I feel like my freshman year was a great experience because I played on the back end of the season. I feel like those were big competition games. It really prepared me to know next year when you’re in these same shoes how you are going to respond and react and show that you’re better than last year,” Douglas recently told Gators Online and others.
