Sumrall's Tulane GM Cole Heard a finalist for major FootballScoop award
Cole Heard, who is expected to join Jon Sumrall’s Florida Gators staff in Gainesville, is being recognized for his work at Tulane. Heard on Thursday was named a finalist for college’s football General Manager of the Year by FootballScoop. The other finalists are: James Blanchard of Texas Tech, Derek Miller of Texas A&M, Barton Simmons of Vanderbilt and Matt Wilson of Indiana.
Tulane, which is 10-2 and ranked No. 20, will play North Texas on Friday night in the American Conference championship game.
Heard flew to Gainesville on Monday with Sumrall for Sumrall’s introductory press conference with Florida. It isn’t yet known what his exact position would be with the Gators but it’s expected to be a front office role.

Heard arrived at Tulane after spending the 2023 season in the same role at Troy with Sumrall. Prior to Troy, he worked for two years at UCF as the Knights’ Assistant Director of Recruiting for Gus Malzahn.
Per his official Wave bio, “Prior to his stint in Orlando, Heard served as Jacksonville State’s Director of Player Personnel Graduate Assistant coach in 2020 and previously worked in various internship roles with the Cleveland Browns (2019). He is a graduate of Jacksonville State University, where he was a member of the Jacksonville State football staff in 2015-2019.”
Heard is a native of Oxford, Ala.
