The Gators survived South Florida’s upset bid on Saturday night in the Swamp, narrowly escaping with a 31-28 comeback win in a game that saw seven lead changes.

The Gators overcame two Anthony Richardson interceptions with their three-headed monster at running back and three turnovers from their defense, including a diving pick from Tre’Vez Johnson to set up Trevor Etienne’s game-winning touchdown.

The Bulls drove into UF territory on the ensuing drive but failed to send the game into overtime, botching their late field goal attempt. USF edged the Gators in all four major offensive categories yet gave up 17 points off turnovers.

Richardson threw a pair of picks and failed to score for the second straight game, but all three UF running backs found the end zone. Montrell Johnson led the team with 103 yards on six yards, including a 62-yard touchdown, followed by Ettiene’s 56 yards on eight carries and Nay’Quan Wright with six carries for 37 yards and a score.

Richardson finished 112 yards on 10 of 18 passing, while USF quarterback Gerry Bohanon threw for 116 yards on 12 of 28 passing and also tossed two interceptions. Outside linebacker Brenton Cox Jr. was a game changer on defense, making a team-high nine tackles, one TFL and two quarterback hurries.

Billy Napier on Florida’s win over USF:

“Hats off to South Florida. You know, Jeff’s got a good football team and certainly they had a great plan tonight I thought, offensively in particular. They played well, they’ve got a transfer at quarterback and a slot of skill players. They blocked us well, gave us some unique concepts. So, a ton of respect for what Jeff’s building. He’s a good friend of mine. We made it hard, but I tell you what — a lot of that had to do with South Florida and their execution.”

“I’m proud of the team and the fight that they showed. This is a group that has shown they’re going to stick together and they’re going to fight through adversity and they’re going to have each other’s back, and do enough on offense, defense and special teams. Something about these one-score games, right? I’m thankful to win and I told the players that. In this game I don’t think people really understand how much work goes into it from our players and our staff. Anytime you win a football game there’s a place to celebrate that, and we’re certainly going do that.”
