Ask Rusty: Georgia football and recruiting intel as preseason camp nears

Believe it or not, preseason camp is soon to start. Georgia football has spent the past several weeks working out of sight and, for many, out of mind. The summer has seen the Bulldogs engage in dozens of workouts, team runs, player-led practices, and walk throughs in preparation for the 2025 season.
Their efforts will kick into a different gear soon as the team will move into The Georgia Center Hotel and focus primarily on football. It’ll start with two helmets-only practices followed by some of the most physical and grueling practices that it’ll go through all season, even counting bloody Tuesdays. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart expects the team to find its identity in that time.
Meanwhile, as we approach the final week of July, Georgia is looking to put a few more finishing touches on its No. 2-ranked 2026 recruiting class. The Bulldogs have a tremendous group already with 13 of the top 152 prospects in the country, but there are more guys on the board.
The lines of scrimmage will be a focus as summer workouts end. Georgia is looking to add Clarke Central (Athens, Ga.) defensive lineman Anthony Lonon Jr. as well as IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) offensive lineman Breck Kolojay. Both players have been pursued heavily by Smart and company throughout the summer and the competition to land them is thick. Lonon will announce his decision on August 2.

Sample questions…
Ibeondat6: It feels like the recruiting cycle has moved up so much earlier in the calendar, our class is basically complete and not a single snap has been played. In the current landscape will there still be big recruiting weekends that take place during gamedays?
RM: Will be Junior heavy and probably players committed elsewhere in the 26 class guys
Mee04: What part of the team this year do you think going to keep Kirby up at night?
RM: Safety spots and young players have to play a lot of quicker.. Can’t wait on the talented ones two years now, have to play them and learn on the go
