We’re less than three months away from the start of the 2025 College Football season. Georgia was once scheduled to take on UCLA to open the 2025 season. That home-and-home series was cancelled and now Marshall awaits in game one.

When the season begins, ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) gives Georgia the second-best odds to make the College Football Playoff and, in turn, the second-best odds to win the National Championship.

The Bulldogs trail only Texas according to the FPI. The Longhorns have an 83.9 percent chance to make the 12-team field while Georgia comes in at 78.6 percent.

Ohio State, the defending National Champions, are next at 70.6 percent while Alabama (66.2 percent) and Penn State (63.8 percent) round out the top five. That order changes a little when you move to odds to win the National Championship. Texas and Georgia, in that order, sit in the top spot. Alabama is slightly ahead of Ohio State with both coming in at 10.8 percent. Penn State is sticking at No. 5 there as well.

Georgia in the No. 2 spot is a bit surprising considering the discussion surrounding the program this offseason. Despite the fact that the Bulldogs won the SEC Championship in 2024, most prognosticators seem to be down on their chances of making serious noise in 2025.

While Gunner Stockton was Georgia’s quarterback for the last six quarters of the season, a half against Texas and the full game against Notre Dame, he’s considered a new starter. He has a lot to prove with Carson Beck moving on to Miami but his meaningful action, to this point, has been against top-notch competition.

In all Georgia has to replace 13 players who were taken in the 2025 NFL Draft. A few other starters and major contributors were picked up as undrafted free agents, leaving Kirby Smart and company with a lot of big shoe to fill.

Still, the Bulldogs bring back one of the most talented rosters in the country, even if well over half of it is made up of either first or second year players. Georgia’s last two recruiting classes ranked No. 1 and No. 2 nationally per the On3 Industry Ranking.
