Georgia beats Kentucky 35-14 behind Gunner Stockton's three scores

ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 35-14 win over Kentucky on Saturday. With the help of a turnover, the Bulldogs put the game away in the third quarter, allowing it to get its reserves plenty of action.
Gunner Stockton completed 15 of 23 passes for 196 yards, a touchdown and his first interception of the season. Chauncey Bowens carried the football 15 time for 70 yards while Dillon Bell reached the end zone twice on the ground and caught four passes for 63 yards.
Georgia got the ball first and got off to an ideal start. It marched 75 yards on 12 plays, eating over six minutes of clock as Stockton punched it in with a 7-yard run on 3rd and 5. A trio of third-down conversions, all on the ground were key in the touchdown drive. Peyton Woodring’s PAT put the Bulldogs up 7-0.
The Wildcats mustered one first down on their opening drive, but it stalled after five plays, forcing a punt. The 55-yard boot was fair caught by Zachariah Branch at the Georgia four-yard line, but the Bulldogs weren’t hampered by the poor field position.
Stockton led the Bulldogs on a 12-play, 96-yard touchdown drive where he converted a 3rd-and-3 scenario with his legs with a 19-yard gain. He punched it in a few players later when kept a zone read, made two men miss, and coasted into the end zone. The PAT staked Georgia to a 14-0 lead.
That two-score lead didn’t last long as Kentucky used a couple of chunk plays to reach the end zone on the ensuing possession. Cutter Boley hit Kendrick Law on a quick screen for a 39-yard pickup on the last play of the first quarter. Two plays later he found his tight end, Josh Cattus, for a 29-yard touchdown on a busted coverage to get the Cats on the board. The PAT cut the Bulldog lead to seven points at 14-7.

After Georgia’s next two possessions ended in Stockton’s first interception of the season and a punt, the Bulldogs extended the lead. A six-play, 40-yard drive was capped off by a three-yard touchdown run from Bell on a jet sweep with the PAT pushing the Bulldog lead to 21-7. That’s how the first half would end as the Wildcats missed a 26-yard field goal as time expired on the second quarter.
The second half started with the ball in Kentucky’s hands, and Georgia’s defense created a short field by forcing and recovering a fumble at the Wildcat 38-yard line. Bell reached the end zone again five plays later on an end around. Woodring’s PAT extended the lead to 28-7.
Another stop from the Georgia defense put the ball back in the offense’s hands, and it put the game away. Stockton led the Bulldogs on a nine-play, 71-yard drive, boosted by a 33-yard pass to Bell. Stockton found Cash Jones for a 16-yard touchdown three plays later. The point after extended the lead to 35-7 and that spelled the end of Stockton’s day.
Kentucky tacked on another touchdown in the final two minutes, a five-yard toss, and that’s how the scoring would end. Georgia is back in action next Saturday with a night-time kickoff at Auburn.
