Athens, Ga – Georgia had its chances on Saturday night. The Bulldogs suffered a dousing 24-21 defeat to Alabama on Saturday night.

It’s not hard to find the chances. Talyn Taylor’s drop, which, if caught, probably gives Georgia a lead in the fourth quarter. The fourth down stop in which Georgia runs Cash Jones to the edge and he’s tackled.

The numbers spell it out, too. Georgia converted two third downs in eight tries. Alabama got 13 of their 19 tries. The Crimson Tide had the football for 35 minutes. Alabama also won the turnover battle, one to zero. That was too much to overcome.

Kirby Smart said what a coach says. The season is not over today, Georgia will look to respond next week as Kentucky comes calling at noon.

“I’d say is we’ve got a good football team that’s gonna get better,” Smart told reporters on Saturday night. “I love the team in that locker room, I’ve repeatedly said, they enjoy practice, they work their butt off, they’re not perfect… We’ve got to worry about the next one, because you can’t let this game beat you twice.”

Slow starts continue to plague Georgia

Georgia was down 14-0 out of the gate. The Bulldogs were in a similar situation in Knoxville. The search for the answer is one that could begin to determine what happens next for Georgia football.

While Smart commended his team for rallying. Asking for comebacks every week is not a long-term solution. It cost Georgia on Saturday night.

Smart feels it starts on defense.

“I don’t have an explanation for it, I mean, got to start well on defense,” Smart said. “I can’t say that it’s not really both sides of the ball. Kicking game, we’ve made some plays. Offensively, we’ve made plays. Defensively, you threw two games; we didn’t get two better opponents to play and we did not execute well in the first. It’s really frustrating because we showed we can in the second half. We showed we can in the second and third quarter with Tennessee, and this game is frustrating.”

Georgia is finding its leaders. Quarterback Gunner Stockton is one whom people will look to in the days to come. He has a plan for how to approach righting the ship in Athens.

“Bring positive energy,” Stockton told reporters post-game. “That’s our team. Just be ready to go to work.”
