Around the Hedges: Georgia Defense Takes a Hit, Home Stretch before National Signing Day

Around the Hedges is just a quick recap on whatever is going on with the Dawgs. Today, I’ll get you up to speed on a slight setback for Georgia’s defense, the final efforts for the Dawgs’ 2022 National Signing Day, and a look ahead to the Bulldogs in NFL conference championship games.

Georgia Defense: minor setback up front

Palmer Thombs broke the news that early-enrollee defensive tackle Bear Alexander will miss the spring with an injury.

The bad news first: obviously this is a tough blow for Alexander. You enroll early, you expect to get reps and get a leg up on the fall. A supposed labrum injury takes that off the table for the big Bear. It’s also tough news for a Georgia defensive front trying to replace Jordan Davis and Devonte Wyatt as they head to the NFL.

The good news: The Dawgs blew out so many opponents in 2021, that the next Dawgs up in 2022 already got a decent amount of reps for Georgia’s defense. As we discussed on my debut appearance of the Dawg Walk Talk Podcast, contributors like Jalen Carter, Zion Logue and Nazir Stackhouse should be in prime position to anchor the unit next season. Get well soon, Bear.

We have plenty of notes in the hopper on major Georgia targets leading up to National Signing Day.

Jake Reuse and Chad Simmons have some revealing updates about the Dawgs’ trail, and the final visits before Georgia locks up the finishing touches on an already loaded 2022 class.

I mentioned the Georgia defense earlier. Our premium content includes updates on 2022 DL’s Shemar Stewart and Christen Miller. As it pertains to RBU: you’ll also want to check out the latest on RB’s Andrew Paul and Jordan James. Sign up for our free 7-Day trial to check that out, as well as the latest developments on some major 2023 targets.

NFL Conference Championship Weekend

I took a look back at some significant moments featuring Georgia Bulldogs in past AFC / NFC Championship games.

This weekend’s action between the Rams and the 49ers, and the Chiefs and the Bengals puts several Dawgs back in the spotlight.

Can’t help but wonder which Georgia alums will be major factors on two teams’ road to yet another Super Bowl featuring players we used to watch Between the Hedges on Saturdays. I think Matthew Stafford channels his inner Stetson Bennett and delivers in the face of national doubt.
