One of Georgia’s top young defenders will be testing the waters of the NFL, as junior defensive lineman Travon Walker has announced his intentions to forgo his senior season.

A 6-foot-5, 275-pound pass rusher from Thomaston, Georgia’s Upson Lee High School and On3 Consensus five-star prospect in the Class of 2019, Walker has been an impact maker for the Dawgs since arrival on campus.

Having featured for the Bulldogs in 36 career games, Walker totaled 9.5 career sacks, including six in the 2021 campaign. Additionally, he recorded 65 total career tackles, 13 tackles for loss, and 32 quarterback hits. He was awarded Freshman All-SEC honors, as well.

In the National Championship, he pressured Alabama’s Bryce Young seven times, a career-high for Walker.

It was a game that clearly meant a great deal to Walker on a number of levels.

“That moment right now, that’s a lifetime experience moment for me, for all my teammates, my family who was here,” he said following the National Championship. “It just really meant a lot to be on this big old stage making plays and having my team win a National Championship and made history for the University of Georgia. It really meant something to me as a Georgia kid and just growing up a Georgia fan. It was really exciting.”

A closer look at Travon Walker and his future

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart is certainly a big fan of Walker’s, heaping on some strong praise earlier this season.

“He is a freak of nature when it comes to athletic ability for that size,” Smart said. “I do not know how many years that it will be before I coach a guy who is that big that can run like that and has really good stamina with great toughness and effort. His stats may not be the best in the world, or they may not be what Azeez’s (Ojulari) are, but he is playing really well. He is playing really physical. He is playing a lot of snaps, and I am really proud of what he is doing in terms of leadership for our team.”

According to CBS draft writer Josh Edwards, Walker is slated as a first-round selection in April’s NFL draft, with Edwards’ mock draft projecting him to the Detroit Lions at Pick No. 27.

Travon Walker joins Georgia running back James Cook in announcing his decision to enter the draft.
