Georgia has had six cornerbacks drafted since Kirby Smart took over as head coach. One of those game in 2024 when Kamari Lassiter was taken by Houston with the No. 42 overall pick, giving the Bulldogs big shoes to fill. Even with just one returning starter at cornerback, On3Sports has the UGA cornerback unit ranked No. 8 in all of College Football.

Jesse Simonton continued ranking the best position units in Collefe Football on Thursday and just like the rest the previous units, Georgia has a group in the top 10.

“The Bulldogs must replace a pair of multi-year starters in corner Kamari Lassiter and star Tykee Smith, who led the team in tackles (70) in 2024,” Simonton writes. “But while there’s uncertainty about the unit’s experience this fall, UGA isn’t short on upside, length or athleticism at the position.

Daylen Everette is back after starting every game in 2023 as a sophomore, and his job isn’t even guaranteed with the likes of sophomores Julian Humphrey and Daniel Harris both vying for starting roles. Georgia also inked the No. 1 corner in the 2024 class in 5-star Ellis Robinson, who spent the entire spring with the 2s but impressed.

“Former 5-star safety Joenel Aguero transitioned to nickel/star this offseason, and the sophomore projects as the starter this fall.”

Lassiter is one of the best all-around Georgia cornerbacks in recent memory. As good as he was in coverage, often locking down whoever was lined up across from him, Lassiter was probably even better as a tackler and in run support.

The Bulldogs have plenty of competitors for that starting spot. Humphrey and Harris each saw meaningful snaps last season with the former playing quite a bit during the regular season before suffering a broken collarbone. Harris played a lot in the Bulldogs’ 63-3 win over Florida State in the Orange Bowl. Both players flirted with the winter transfer portal window but elected to stick around.

Robinson is also in the mix despite playing exclusively with the second-team defense in the G-Day spring scrimmage. Kirby Smart told reporters this spring that he viewed the competition at cornerback as a four-man battle with Robinson, Everette, Harris, and Harris. He also said that at least one of those guys, probably Everette, would get looks at STAR.

After a strong spring, Aguero seems to have that STAR/nickel spot locked down. JaCorey Thomas also worked there this spring and Kyron Jones is in the mix as well.
