On Tuesday, Georgia senior defensive lineman Jordan Davis was announced as the season’s first winner of the Nagurski Trophy National Defensive Player of the Week. Helping the Bulldogs to a 10-3 victory over Clemson, Davis had three tackles and one sack.

Davis’ impact might not normally show up on the stat sheet. However, his 6-foot-6, 330-pound frame typically plays a big part in plugging up the middle of the defense. Georgia limited Clemson to just two rushing yards on the night. In the first half, the Bulldogs held the Tigers scoreless headed into the locker room for the first time in their last 143 games.

“Two on me means somebody’s free,” Davis told ESPN’s Holly Rowe in a postgame on-field interview. “I know that’s going to free up a linebacker or another defensive lineman. It’s amazing they have that type of respect for me. We came out here and played the game we were supposed to play.”

Davis, who was playing in his hometown of Charlotte, N.C., is the first Georgia player to win the Nagurki Trophy’s Player of the Week since 2012 when Jarvis Jones took the recognition home. However, Georgia isn’t short on representation in Nagurski Trophy history. In two of the last four seasons, a Bulldog defender has been a finalist for the season-long award. Champ Bailey won that same award in 1998.
