Georgia football injury update: Latest on Juan Gaston, Earnest Greene

ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia is on the road for week three of the 2025 College Football season. It will open SEC play at Tennessee (3:30 p.m. ET on ABC) on Saturday and Kirby Smart is hopeful that it gets the starting right side of his offensive line back. Juan Gaston, a true freshman, and Earnest Greene, a fourth-year junior, haven’t played since the first quarter of game one, and Smart didn’t give much info on either guy when he spoke with the Georgia beat on Monday.
“Both Juan and Earnest, we’ll learn more about today and see where they are,” Smart said. “They’re both coming off of bumps and bruises and injuries, but hopeful to get them back.”
Greene is dealing with some back stiffness. He missed all of the 2022 season after having back surgery. Gaston is battling relatively minor injuries to both his knee and ankle.
Gaston, who became the first true freshman offensive lineman to start for Georgia in a season opener since 2017, exited the Marshall game after the Bulldogs second touchdown of the day. The starting right guard was rolled up on as Gunner Stockton kept a zone read and ran it 13 yards for a touchdown. Gaston walked off the field under his own power but never reentered the game.

Greene’s injury was less obvious but he, too, didn’t see action after the second series. He was replaced by Bo Hughley, who played the rest of the first-team snaps at right tackle. It wasn’t until later in the game that Georgia Bulldog Radio Network sideline reporter DJ Shockley revealed that he was out with a leg injury. Jahzare Jackson got the start at right tackle against Austin Peay. Michael Uini started at right guard.
Uini moved to right tackle when Jackson went down with an injury during the Austin Peay game. Georgia brought Dontrell Glover in at right guard at that time. The Bulldogs also used Hughley at right tackle in the second half of that game.
A California native, Greene made his first start at right tackle on in the season opener. He had previously started 23 games at left tackle with 14 of those taking place in 2023 and nine more to start the 2024 season. A left shoulder injury sidelined him for three games to end the 2024 regular season.
