A pair of Georgia players have been honored by the SEC after its thrilling 44-41 overtime victory at Tennessee. Bulldog quarterback Gunner Stockton is the league’s offensive player of the week while junior place-kicker Peyton Woodring is the special teams player of the week.

Stockton completed 74 percent of his passes, 23 of 31, for a career-high 304 yards and two touchdowns in his first SEC start. It was also his first true road start. Stockton added a rushing touchdown and 38 rushing yards on 13 carries.

The fourth-year junior led an offense that scored 38 points in regulation and battled back from five different deficits in the game. Stockton opened Georgia’s scoring with a with a six-yard touchdown in the first quarter, allowing Georgia to tie the game at seven. He then tossed a 36-yard touchdown to Zachariah Branch in the second quarter to pull the Bulldogs closer at 21-14.

Stockton’s final touchdown of the day was the biggest, a 28-yard hookup with London Humphreys on 4th and 6 to pull UGA to within two points at 38-36 before finding Branch on the two-point try to tie it up at 38. The Tiger, Ga. native also had three completions of 30 yards or more and seven passes that went for 15 or more yards.

“He’s so tough,” Kirby Smart said after the game. “I mean, he takes shot after shot. You know, I thought he did a good job with the run game — I’m talking about his run game. He saved us on a couple of third downs. IN the red area he made a couple runs. That plus-one run game can be big for us if he can protect himself. I thought he grew up tonight. He grew up a lot. He stood it in there. The fourth-down throw that he made was really good.”

Woodring earned the honor by being perfect on all of his field goal opportunities and by stifling Tennessee’s kick return game as Georgia didn’t allow a single return. Woodring connected on three field goals, the longest of which was 48 yards. Woodring also had makes of 20 and 24 yards.

Georgia’s win at Tennessee gave it five straight in Knoxville and nine straight in the series, the longest ever win streak for either team. It started a string of eight consecutive SEC contests for the Bulldogs, who are on bye this week before taking on Alabama on September 27.
