Kirby Smart Hires Georgia Alums to Staff - Who's Next?

Kirby Smart’s hires of late include fellow Georgia football alums Mike Bobo and Bryan McClendon.

When you consider that Will Muschamp is already on staff, it’s insane to see just how many former Dawgs find themselves in prominent roles as current Dawgs.

Dawg alums, assemble.

Smart is just the fourth FBS head coach in the last 60 years to win a National Championship with his alma mater (per ESPN Stats & Info). Clearly, he wants to share that wealth with his fellow Georgia Bulldogs the next time they win the Natty.

With (former head coach) Muschamp as co-defensive coordinator alongside Glenn Schumann, McClendon ditching Miami’s co-offensive coordinator opportunity for a Georgia position group, and Bobo off the field as an offensive analyst, it shows me just how powerful a couple things are:

1. Athens is undefeated.

2. Coaches and former players do not want to miss out on an opportunity to get the gang back together and be a part of the monster that Kirby Smart is building.

So, that made me wonder about the next Kirby Smart hires…

Who are some other Georgia alums that could boost Kirby Smart’s staff?

Billy Napier’s Florida staff is getting all the offseason bouquets. Between that, and supply chain issues, I’ve already accepted an early ‘L’ for my Valentine’s Day evaluation at home.

Napier’s unique job titles are generating a lot of the buzz (e.g. ‘Gamechanger Coordinator’ instead of ‘head special teams coach’).

So, like Nakobe Dean and Nolan Smith, I’ll steal something from a Gator and run with it.

Wayne Knight – Special Assistant to the Mailman

Someone needs to sort Stetson’s fan mail and separate it from the absurd messages he gets from his critics.

And I don’t mean e-mail.

Bennett’s use of a flip phone tells me he also dabbles in hand-written letters; maybe even carrier pigeons or beepers, too. Who better to sort the Mailman’s mail, than a fellow Mailman? Remember: when you control the mail, you control… information.

Kyle Chandler – Quarterback coach / Director of Team Messaging

After passing up on a devoted quarterback coach for years, it’s finally time for the Dawgs to get with the times. Chandler’s role as Eric Taylor from ‘Friday Night Lights’ shows us what his real coaching style might look like. Maybe he’ll stick with this one instead of bailing, like he did at Texas Methodist.

Chandler’s been in some gritty crime dramas (The Wolf of Wall Street, Bloodline, Mayor of Kingstown) since he left Dillon. It’s time for Kirby Smart’s hires to include someone who can consult with him on some team slogans as well.

‘You’re either elite or you’re not,’ is good. Nothing will top ‘Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose.’

Bill Goldberg: Get-back Coach

Goldberg can finally relieve Scott Sinclair of his get-back coach duties, so Sinclair can get back to the place we all know he’d rather be on Saturdays: the gym.

Here’s the deal, though. Goldberg really won’t have to hold on to Kirby’s belt loop at all. He could just be responsible for standing behind Smart, and daring the officials to throw a flag any time he runs out onto the field.

Of all my fictional Kirby Smart hires, I think this one makes the most sense. Sometimes you just have to tilt the field in your favor a little bit if the refs are infringing upon your coach’s ability to full express himself. It’s only gamesmanship.

Plus, Goldberg learned from the best under Vince Dooley.

Michael Stipe: Director of Townie NIL Relations

Hat tip to Jake Reuse for the assist on this title. Stipe will cut through all the crap with Athens’ local businesses and make sure all Georgia players’ NIL deals with craft breweries and music venues are above board.

The Creature Comforts cornerback, 40 Watt fullback*, and Weaver D’s defensive captain will all be under Stipe’s purview.

If you think NIL is the end of the college football world as we know it, then maybe deals like the one that these Dawgs struck up with the DGD Fund and Onward Reserve can prevent you from losing your religion.

(*Let me dream, alright.)
