No. 2 Hoosiers Steamroll Maryland 55–10 Behind Ground Game and Takeaways

By Shannon Griffith | Lead Football Analyst | TheHoosier.com
The No. 2-ranked Indiana Hoosiers continued their dominant run through the 2025 season, leaving no doubt in College Park with a 55–10 rout of Maryland on Saturday in front of a sold-out Homecoming crowd at SECU Stadium.
Indiana’s offense was relentless, pounding the Terps defense with 363 rushing yards and a balanced aerial attack led by quarterback Fernando Mendoza, who completed 14 of 21 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns. The Hoosiers’ powerful one-two backfield punch of Kaelon Black and Roman Hemby controlled the tempo and kept the chains moving all afternoon.
Ground Attack Unleashes
From the opening kickoff, it was clear Indiana wanted to establish physical dominance at the line of scrimmage. The offensive line opened lanes that allowed Black and Hemby to rip off chunk gains and wear down Maryland’s front seven. The Hoosiers averaged nearly seven yards per carry, controlling time of possession and dictating every aspect of the game.
Defense Forces Five Turnovers
The Hoosier defense delivered one of its most complete performances of the season, forcing five turnovers, including a highlight play from Devan Boykin, who returned a fumble 32 yards for a touchdown. Maryland was held to just 37 yards rushing and 256 yards passing, never finding rhythm against Indiana’s aggressive front.
The Terps’ offense struggled to find a footing as IU’s secondary consistently shut down deep routes while the front seven brought pressure on every series.

Mendoza’s Efficiency
While the run game dominated, Mendoza remained steady under center, spreading the ball efficiently to a deep group of receivers. His composure and decision-making continue to be the backbone of Indiana’s offensive success this season.
What’s Next
The Hoosiers (8–0) maintain their No. 2 national ranking and now shift their focus to Happy Valley for a marquee matchup against Penn State in FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff. Saturday’s clash could carry major College Football Playoff implications, especially with the first CFP rankings set to be released Tuesday night.
If Indiana continues its physical dominance and balanced attack, Curt Cignetti’s squad could find itself in a prime position for a historic postseason run.
