Indiana agrees to new deal with defensive coordinator Bryant Haines

Indiana football has reached a new contract agreement with defensive coordinator Bryant Haines that will make him one of the highest-paid assistant coaches in college football, according to a report from CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz.

TheHoosier.com can confirm the report and is continuing to work to determine the full details of the deal.

Sources confirm to TheHoosier.com that Haines’ new deal is for three years and will make him one of the highest-paid assistants in the country. He is expected to make close to $3 million.

Haines’ previous contract paid him $2 million in 2025, $2.1 million in 2026 and $2.2 million in 2027. The new agreement further underscores Indiana’s increased investment in football under athletic director Scott Dolson and IU president Pam Whitten.

Hired in 2024 after following head coach Curt Cignetti to Bloomington, Haines became the first Indiana assistant to earn $1 million annually. His impact has been immediate and sustained. This season, Indiana’s defense ranks first nationally in fewest first downs allowed per game and second in fewest points allowed per contest.

Across Haines’ two seasons as defensive coordinator, Indiana has compiled a 24-2 record, reached the College Football Playoff in 2024, and climbed to No. 1 in the national rankings for the first time in program history.

Haines has also drawn national acclaim, earning AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year honors this season and becoming a finalist for the Broyles Award for the second straight year.
