Indiana extends offer to 2027 guard Jymin Veney after Peach Jam breakout

Indiana is doubling down on its DMV recruiting pipeline.

The Hoosiers became the first high-major program to offer 2027 point guard Jymin Veney on Friday, rewarding the rising star for a strong week at Nike’s prestigious Peach Jam tournament in North Augusta, South Carolina.

Veney, a 6-foot-3 floor general from St. John’s College High School in Washington, D.C., has been turning heads this summer with Team Melo on the Nike EYBL circuit.

His breakout performances in front of college coaches during the opening days of the July evaluation period appear to have cemented his status as a high-major prospect.

In five games at Peach Jam, Veney averaged 14.6 points, 3.6 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 1.8 steals while shooting 59% on two-point attempts and a scorching 92% from the free-throw line. While his 3-point percentage sat at just 25%, his smooth mechanics and elite free-throw numbers suggest untapped potential from deep.

On Thursday, Veney poured in 17 points to go along with four assists and two steals. He followed up Friday with a standout 22-point performance, knocking down two of his five attempts from beyond the arc and adding five rebounds, four assists and two more steals.

That was enough to earn the attention — and an offer — from Indiana.

IU assistant coach Kenny Johnson, a D.C. native and former Georgetown assistant, has been tracking Veney’s progress for some time. Johnson’s familiarity with the DMV scene continues to be a key factor in Indiana’s aggressive push into the Mid-Atlantic region.

Veney’s recruitment has been steadily building. Prior to Indiana’s offer, he held scholarship offers from La Salle, Old Dominion, St. Joseph’s and East Carolina.

Rivals currently lists him as a three-star prospect and the No. 139 player nationally in the class of 2027 — his only national ranking to date. With his recent surge in production and exposure, a rise in the rankings and additional interest are expected.

Veney’s game is defined by a blend of strength, speed and skill. He excels at getting downhill and finishing through contact at the rim, and he’s adept at creating separation for midrange jumpers off the dribble.

He’s also the second-leading scorer and top assist man for Team Melo’s 16U squad, which qualified for Peach Jam.

Basketball runs deep in Veney’s veins. His father, Reggie Veney, played at UNC-Wilmington. His uncle, Keith Veney, was a legendary shooter at Marshall, where he once hit an NCAA-record 15 3-pointers in a single game en route to a 51-point outing. Keith Veney’s 409 career triples once stood as an NCAA record, and he is enshrined in the Marshall Hall of Fame.

With his pedigree and recent performances, Veney is quickly emerging as one of the most intriguing young guards in the 2027 class — and Indiana is officially in on the ground floor.
