Curt Cignetti and the Hoosiers added another key piece to their 2026 recruiting class Friday with the commitment of three-star safety Jamar Owens.

Owens, a 6-foot, 180-pound defensive back out of Douglas County High School in Georgia, announced his decision following a recent official visit to Bloomington on June 20.

The commitment a week just days after Owens wrapped up a stretch of visits that included stops at North Carolina (June 6) and Georgia Tech (June 13).

Ranked the No. 70 safety in the 2026 class by the On3 Industry Ranking, Owens chose the Hoosiers from a list of offers that included more than 40 programs. Among the schools he expressed strong interest in were Miami (FL), Auburn and the schools he visited recently — North Carolina and Georgia Tech.

The relationship with Indiana’s coaching staff played a critical role in Owens’ decision.

“First off, it starts with the relationship I have with the coaches,” Owens told CaneSport earlier this year. “And then the trust I have in the coaching and what majors are provided at the school. Also, I want to play for someone who is going to develop me as a football player on and off the field.”

Owens becomes the latest addition to what is shaping up to be one of Indiana’s strongest recruiting classes in recent memory. Despite losing a pledge from four-star Jay Timmons earlier this week, the Hoosiers’ 2026 class now sits at No. 30 nationally and No. 11 in the Big Ten, according to On3.

Last season, Owens recorded 70 tackles, three interceptions and two forced fumbles. Owens, who began his high school career at Jonesboro High School before transferring to Douglas County, spent some time at Jonesboro in the same secondary as four-star safety Cortez Redding, another high-priority target for Indiana who is scheduled to announce his commitment on July 25.

It remains to be seen whether Owens’ pledge to the Hoosiers will aid Indiana in its pursuit of Redding.

Owens is the second safety to commit to Indiana this cycle, joining three-star LaRon Dues, and continues a strong summer run on the recruiting trail for Cignetti and his staff.
