Indiana's Kellan Wyatt (13) tackles Kennesaw State's Alexander Diggs (3) for a loss during the Indiana versus Kennesaw State Big Ten football game at Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2025.

Indiana football will likely be moving forward for most of the remainder of the season without a key defensive player in Kellan Wyatt.

Wyatt suffered a knee injury in Saturday’s 38-13 win over Michigan State in the second half after going down on a pass rush.

“Wyatt suffered a knee injury. Pass rushing, was engaged with the offensive tackle. Got his leg extended and came down a little funny,” Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti said on Monday. “Looks like a long-term injury and not sure we’ll see him the rest of the season.”

He had two tackles and one quarterback hurry before exiting the game.

Wyatt transferred in from Maryland and immediately made an impact for Indiana. Through 6.5 games he has 27 tackles, 8.0 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. He had 4.5 tackles for loss and all 2.5 recorded sacks in Big Ten play alone.

Wyatt was having his best season defending the run and pressuring the quarterback.

“Outside, Wyatt, since the day he got here really has been impressive,” Cignetti said last week. “He got great work ethic. He’s really smart. He’s very versatile. He’s a good football player. And that was a key acquisition.”

Wyatt, a 6-foot-2, 257-pound defensive lineman, arrived at Indiana after 23 career starts. He had 64 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks and two forced fumbles over his last two seasons.

“Wyatt is a high effort, high energy, intelligent guy,” Cignetti said during fall camp. “He’s very versatile, he could do a lot of different things, he’s had a really good camp. He’ll be a big addition for us.”

Stephen Daley is coming off of his best game to date at Indiana. The Kent State transfer had three tackles and two sacks against Michigan State. Indiana will lean on Daley more in Wyatt’s absence.

“Yeah, he’s a guy I really wish we had a couple years because he’s a tremendous athlete and once he’s learned the defense, he’s really making fast progress,” Cignetti said. “He has size, strength, speed, suddenness. He plays hard. He was our player of the game on defense last week. He’ll take on even more of a role now.”

In addition to Daley, Hosea Wheeler, Mikail Kamara, Mario Landino and Tyrique Tucker round out the defensive line that had been playing extremely well through seven games for the Hoosiers.

Indiana is second in the nation in tackles for loss and is third in sacks.

Indiana takes on UCLA on Saturday at Noon ET in Bloomington.
