Emely Rodriguez "suspended indefinitely" for violation of team rules
The murky situation surrounding the status of Iowa women’s basketball forward Emely Rodriguez finally has a bit of clarity to it. On3’s Talia Goodman reported on Thursday afternoon that the former UCF transfer is “suspended indefinitely” for a violation of team rules and will not travel with the team to New York for the Women’s Champions Classic. Goodman says that sources tell her Rodriguez has the opportunity to rejoin the team if she “recommits to the standards” of the program.
The situation goes all the way back to the Hawkeyes trip to Orlando for the WBCA Showcase. Rodriguez played just four minutes in their 64-61 win over Miami FL and has missed the last five games. Initially, head coach Jan Jensen said that Emely had a “day-to-day” status with a back injury, but she did not travel with the team for away games at Rutgers and Iowa State. Rodriguez was then notably absent from the bench for Iowa’s last home game against Lindenwood. When asked about it, Jensen gave a less than clear answer.

“There’s a lot of things I’m trying to figure out with that one. Definitely still day-to-day.”
On Tuesday, at weekly media availability, when initially asked about Emely’s status, Jan called her “day-to-day”. She was later asked a follow-up question about her absence from the bench during the Lindenwood game and if she was still with the team. Her answer raised some eyebrows.
“She is as of right now, yeah”
On the season, Rodriguez has appeared in six games, averaging 7.2 points and 2.0 rebounds per game, including a season-high 13 points against Southern in the season-opener. With Emely out for what appears to be the foreseeable future, expect to see freshman Journey Houston continue to get a decent chunk of minutes. The former four-star recruit is averaging 4.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 13.2 minutes per game. Sophomore guard Taylor Stremlow will also be able to fill in at the small forward position for minutes as well.
