It was nearly a foregone conclusion after Saturday’s results, but Big 12 Champion Kansas State will face Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. K-State did clinch an automatic berth to the New Year’s Six Bowl after defeating TCU in overtime at AT&T Stadium to win the Big 12 Championship Game.

Kansas State finished the regular season at 9-3 and were No. 10 in last week’s College Football Playoff poll. TCU was listed as the No. 3 team in the nation by the committee a week ago after completing the year at 12-0.

However, a Ty Zentner game-winning field goal as time expired gave the Horned Frogs their first blemish on the season.

After a rematch with TCU, K-State will now face an SEC team in a bowl game for the second consecutive year. Of course, Kansas State defeated LSU in Houston almost a year ago in the Texas Bowl soon after they hired Brian Kelly as their new head coach.

Alabama may have wanted to advance to the playoff, and head coach Nick Saban sure tried to campaign for it throughout Saturday once K-State had knocked off the Horned Frogs in the Big 12 title game, but they fell short and were labeled the No. 5 team in America in the final rankings.

Because of that, the Crimson Tide are the highest-ranked non-SEC champion (Georgia is in the playoff) and will also travel to the Caesars Superdome on New Year’s Eve and meet with Chris Klieman and Kansas State.
