This is the second edition of KSR’s 2025-26 Kentucky Women’s Basketball Position Preview series. In this series, we’ll go through each of the five positions — point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward and center — and we’ll break down what is to be expected at each position heading into this season.

Kentucky has some big shoes to fill after Dazia Lawrence used up her final year of eligibility last season. After putting up 12.9 points per game on 39% shooting from the three-point line, there’s a lot of production there that has to be made up.

Luckily, Kenny Brooks went out and got a plethora of talent in the transfer portal this offseason. Former Sacred Heart Academy and WKU star Josie Gilvin was Kentucky’s first portal commitment, and there’s a good reason why that is. Clearly, she fits the mold of a Lawrence replacement. Gilvin can shoot it from deep and she brings years of experience along with her. She’s also a very solid defender.

It seems likely that Gilvin could be the starter at shooting guard heading into the season, especially given her collegiate experience.

However, there’s also players like Asia Boone and Dominika Paurová who could certainly compete for a starting bid at the two. Boone averaged 10.2 points per game on 36.9% shooting from deep in that role for Liberty last year, and Paurová was the sixth man on an Elite Eight Oregon State team prior to her time in Lexington.

Even someone like Lexi Blue could be dark horse candidate as a starter, especially considering her potential as a former top 40 recruit. If Brooks wants to go big with his lineup, perhaps Jordan Obi could step into the shooting guard spot.

While it seems like Gilvin would be the starting shooting guard at the moment, it’s certainly not a done deal. Boone and Paurová are certainly potential starters too. It’ll be interesting to see how that situation develops over the summer.
