This is significant. Devin Smith will take an official visit to Kentucky this weekend for the Wildcats’ 2023 season opener on Saturday against Ball State.

Smith is a 6-foot-1, 215-pound linebacker out of Brunswick (GA) High who is considered the No. 606 overall prospect in the class of 2024 according to the On3 Industry Ranking — good enough for a mid-level three-star rating. Smith announced the news of his official visit through social media on Friday morning. He’ll be in Lexington starting today (Sept. 1) until Sunday (Sept. 3).

It was nearly two months ago now that Smith trimmed his list of college options down to five: Kentucky, Alabama, South Carolina, LSU, and Auburn. Of note, Southern California offered him on July 30. Although Smith has taken roughly two dozen unofficial visits to various schools, UK will be his first official visit.

This won’t be the first time Smith has been in Lexington though. He’s made it to campus at least two previous times, most recently back in the spring. He’s also unofficially visited the rest of his top five multiple times over the last year-plus. Brunswick High School has a bye week after starting the 2023 season with a 21-17 win last week, which opened up the opportunity for a weekend-long trip to Lexington.

It’s unclear exactly where the Wildcats fall in Smith’s pecking order, but the ‘Cats do already have two linebacker commitments in the 2024 recruiting classAntwan Smith is considered an EDGE, but the Atlanta metro prospect is projected to play inside linebacker at Kentucky. The Wildcats also locked up a commitment from four-star linebacker Elijah Groves back in July. That being said, Devin Smith scheduling his first OV to UK is certainly notable.

Like the other linebackers Kentucky has recruited, Smith can play inside or on the EDGE. Despite missing some action last fall, he tallied 63 tackles, 10 for loss, and six sacks. Going into his senior season, he was tabbed to the Georgia Preseason All-State Team by The Atlanta Journal-Consitution.
