John Calipari continues to attack the recruiting trail this summer. The Kentucky men’s basketball head coach has traveled all over the globe to watch his top prospects the last few months. One event, in particular, the 2022 U17 FIBA World Cup, brought him to Spain where he watched Team USA dominate the competition en route to another gold medal. One of the players Calipari was watching must’ve been extra impressive.

On Wednesday evening, Pro Insight’s Andrew Slater first reported that five-star class of 2024 point guard, Johnuel “Boogie” Fland, has received a scholarship from Kentucky. Fland then confirmed the news through his personal Instagram account. Along with UK, he now holds offers from the likes of Michigan, Indiana, Oregon, Kansas, LSU, and Georgia, among plenty others.

Fland, a 6-foot-3, 165-pound prospect out of Archbishop Stepinac (NY) is considered the No. 8 overall recruit and No. 2 ranked point guard in the rising junior class. He was a do-it-all playmaker for Team USA, averaging 4.6 points, 2.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 2.1 steals per contest across seven games. Fland’s most impressive outing was his first game of the event when he stuffed the stat sheet with four points, seven rebounds, nine assists, and five steals with zero turnovers. He went for six assists and six steals two games later.

Here is what On3’s scouting department has to say about Fland’s on-court game.

Boogie Fland plays with a New York flair. He has a good handle and is able to shoot the ball from each level. He has deep range off the bounce and will pull up if you give him an inch. He sees the floor well but seems to be most confident when he is looking for his shot first. There is a floater game in there as well, with a one and two dribble pull-up. He will need to continue getting stronger and he is a solid athlete and has average length. The confidence is sky-high and the skill set is obvious. He missed a lot of his sophomore season with injury.

Kentucky has now offered six ’24 prospects, which is a significant change in approach from how Calipari has recruited underclassmen in previous offseasons. Fland has been a target for the coaching staff for some time now, but UK waited until after his showing at the World Cup to extend an offer. He’ll be one to keep a close eye on moving forward.
