Kenny Brooks has officially received his first commitment as head coach of Kentucky women’s basketball.

On Thursday, 6-foot-3 Australian sophomore forward Amelia Hassett announced her commitment to the University of Kentucky via Instagram.

Very excited to announce my commitment to University of Kentucky to continue my athletic and academic career,” Hassett said in her commitment post. “I would like to thank my coaches, friends and family and everyone who helped me throughout this process and gave me the support and guidance. Go wildcats💙🤍.”

Hassett, who hails from Adelong, New South Wales in Australia, originally committed to Virginia Tech on Feb. 10 when Brooks was still the head coach of the Hokies, but she’ll instead follow Brooks to Lexington.

For the Eastern Florida State College Titans (JUCO) this past season, Hassett averaged 19.0 points on 54.5% shooting from the field, including 40.4% from three-point range. Along with that, she grabbed 12.7 rebounds per game, finishing with 20 double-doubles.

Brooks has been phenomenal at recruiting throughout his coaching career, even internationally.

He had additional class of 2024 commitments at Virginia Tech from 6-foot-2 wing Lexi Blue (Florida), 6-foot-4 forward Myah Hazelton (Maryland), and 6-foot-7 center Clara Silva (Portugal). Two of his players from last season, All-American point guard Georgia Amoore and 6-foot-5 sophomore Clara Strack, entered their names into the transfer portal earlier this week with “do not contact” tags.

Hassett provides much-needed size for Kentucky heading into the 2024-25 season considering Ajae Petty, Janae Walker, Nyah Leveretter, and Jordy Griggs — all 6-foot-2 or taller — hit the portal this offseason. A major roster overhaul is expected heading into the 2024-25 season.

If you haven’t yet, now’s the time to buy stock in Kentucky women’s basketball.
