Austin MacGinnis Waived By L.A. Rams In Preseason

Austin MacGinnis’ NFL dream hit another bump in the road on Monday when he was waived by the Los Angeles Rams before the team’s second preseason game. MacGinnis and four roster hopefuls at other positions were let go, leaving starter Matt Gay as the only kicker on the current roster.
MacGinnis spent all of 2020 on the Rams’ practice squad, but wasn’t one of the three kickers who played multiple games last season. In fact, he was skipped over for Matt Gay when Los Angeles needed to go to a third kicker late in the season.

The season-long backup, MacGinnis was in position to take over with Kai Forbath moving to IR, and make his first career start on Monday Night Football. But the day of the game, the Rams signed Gay from the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad and started him over MacGinnis. Gay made all three extra points and two of his three field goal tries, including the game-winner, and it has been his job ever since.
Ugh, it could’ve been Austin.
The good news, the first weekend of preseason games showed us many NFL kickers are still terrible, so MacGinnis may get work again soon.
He certainly deserves it.
