Barry Slice's Golf Trail: Nevel Meade

nevel It's May, which for me, personally, means the official start of golf season. In dedication to my favorite time of year and to all the fellow golfers out there in BBN, I've decided to feature some of the great courses Kentucky has to offer. Barry Slice's Golf Trail will only consist of Kentucky's public courses, because not everyone has equal opportunity to play our state's private courses and I want everyone reading to be able to enjoy the game of golf the same. To kick off our tour of Barry Slice's Golf Trail, we go to arguably my favorite course in the state, Nevel Meade. Nevel Meade, rests on rolling farmland of Oldham County about 25 minutes from downtown Louisville. It is a Scottish links style course, so if you are like me and are constantly having deal with trees on the golf course, Nevel Meade is the perfect course for you. There are about 3 trees on the entire course, and almost none of them come into play. This time of year, the course is always absolutely gorgeous and in nearly perfect condition. The tee boxes, fairways and greens are bent grass, which is always a treat to play on. The course features a lot of blind tee shots off the tee, so if you are playing in a money game, make sure you're playing with someone who has played the course before. The greens are small but roll perfectly, oh and just a tip, they may look like they break a lot but they don't, so don't give up the hole when reading your putts there. Measuring 6,844 from the back tees and just shy of 5,900 yards from the forward tees, Nevel Meade is a good test for all skill levels. Most of the trouble on the course lies in the long grass, that lines both sides of nearly every hole. There is more room for error than what appears, however. According to their website, weekday green fees are listed at $25 and weekend rates are $35 not including cart fee. That is an absurdly good deal, considering how well the course is kept. One of my favorite parts of the Nevel Meade is that all the carts have GPS along with the course being marked well, so yardages are never really an issue. Nevel Meade gets two thumbs up on the Barry Slice Golf Trail. If you've never played there and are looking for a new place to play, take a trip to Oldham County one day and play Nevel. I promise you will love it. Grades: Tee Boxes: A Fairways: A+ Greens: B+ Rough: B Bunkers: B Walker Friendly: C
