BBNBA: Bam Adebayo, PJ Washington make huge plays in Heat-Hornets game

Small but exciting bit of action from last night’s NBA games heading into the All-Star break. PJ Washington and Bam Adebayo battled in double-overtime and Tyrese Maxey boosted Philly to another victory. Check it out.

Heat outlast Hornets in double overtime

In one of the uglier double-overtime games you’ll see, Miami overcame Charlotte in a 58-minute slugfest to maintain a tie with Chicago for the East’s one-seed heading into the All-Star Break.

The Heat entered the fourth quarter with less than 70 points and trailed by double-digits for much of the second half before rallying to tie it up. Bam Adebayo helped spark the comeback in the fourth with a pair of buckets, an assist to Jimmy Butler and a block that definitely looked like goal-tending but wasn’t called. (Who cares, it looked awesome).

Then, in the first overtime period, Miami jumped out to the lead and PJ Washington helped power a Hornets spurt. He cut the lead to one with 30 seconds left in the period with a tough layup and then got a hand in the face of Butler on a 3-point attempt at the horn a few possessions later to extend the game.

In the second OT, the Heat earned a quick lead and kept it this time around, finally securing the win. Tough loss for Charlotte, though, who led for most of the night and could have finished at an even .500 ahead of the break had they won. Instead, they occupy the nine slot in the East at 29-31 — still right in the thick of the play-in race.

Maxey, Sixers beat Bucks on the road

Tyrese Maxey ought to enjoy his role while he still has it. With James Harden arriving sometime after the All-Star Break, Maxey’s 13.4 shot attempts per game and role as primary ball handler will surely dwindle. Perhaps it shouldn’t. So far in his sophomore season, Maxey is scoring 16.9 points per game and shooting 39% from three while leading the 76ers in minutes and assists. He’s also 10th in the NBA in assist to turnover ratio. Not bad for a dude who hadn’t played point guard since high school before this season.

Joel Embiid was the center of attention last night — and most other nights, to be fair. He came to play against Giannis and the Bucks’ front line, scoring 42 points on 67% shooting. Maxey finished second on the team in scoring with 19, although he didn’t shoot particularly well. Instead, he employed a bit of a Harden-esque tactic to put points on the board by getting to the free throw line 10 times and making all 10.

The Sixers are rolling heading into the break.
