BBNBA: Tyrese Maxey goes off for 52, leads Sixers to 2OT win

There was a brief moment last night where Tyrese Maxey setting a career-high with 52 points, including a game-tying bucket at the end of regulation, was going to be the biggest story in the Kentucky sports world. Maybe not so much anymore.

But anyway, uh…extra, extra, read all about it!

Maxey, who has been on a tear since Joel Embiid has been sidelined, gobbled up a 50-burger on Sunday, including some late-game heroics. Down two with 2.7 seconds remaining on the clock in the 4th quarter, Maxey caught a pass of a well-drawn-up inbounds play and made a driving layup to send the game into overtime. The Philadelphia 76ers went on to beat the San Antonio Spurs 133-126 in double OT.

One of the most impressive stats from his outing was that Maxey became the first person to ever score 50 points in both high school and the NBA in the same arena. A Texas native, Maxey played a few games in the Spurs’ building while attending South Garland and like most good basketball players, scored a ton of points in high school. Now he’s a really good player in the NBA, but to drop 50 in the same arena in both high school and the pros is kind of mind-blowing, especially since it is not his home court.

Maxey also added five rebounds, seven assists, and two steals and played a ridiculously high 54 minutes. Sunday marks the third time this season Maxey has hit the 50 mark and he and Embiid are now the first-ever NBA teammates to score at least 50 points in three games a piece.

Have a night Mr. Maxey. It was a much more joyous one than what Big Blue Nation experienced.

Immanuel Quickley with a monster double-double Raptors win

It wasn’t a 50-spot, but Tyrese Maxey’s former Kentucky backcourt running mate, Immanuel Quickley had a heck of a game Sunday himself. Quick finished the night with 31 points, 13 assists (including a particularly sick no-look dime), seven boards, and a steal in Toronto’s win over the Wizards.

It marked his 8th career 30-point game.

The former Kentucky guard will have a dramatic offseason with many teams vying for her services. He will be a restricted free agent, so Toronto can match any offer another team gives him, but they better dig deep into their Canadian pockets if they want to keep him up north. He’ll be a hot commodity.

Other BBNBA Notes:

  • Johnny Juzang led the Utah Jazz in scoring off the bench. He scored 27 points on an extremely efficient 9-12 from the field and 7-8 from behind the arc in a loss to the Warriors.
  • Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro combined for 41 points (which is good but still 11 fewer than Maxey had by himself) in the Heat’s two-point loss to Indiana. Oscar Tshiebwe dressed but did not play for the Pacers and Isaiah Jackson saw less than one minute of action.
  • Although he was efficient from inside the arc, Devin Booker reverted back to some poor outside shooting on Sunday as he went 0-6 from deep and the Suns lost to the Pelicans despite his 25 points.

Today in the NBA

The NBA is giving the NCAA Championship game its space to shine. There are no games tonight. Instead, all eyes will be on UConn to see if they can win their second title in a row. And then maybe some more eyes will be on private jet trackers for Dan Hurley.

I was at the Final Four’s free concert in Phoenix last night when the Calipari news broke. Mumford and Sons blasted over loudspeakers as I read the reports and texted everyone I knew to see if this was real or nonsense. It was a moment I will remember where I was when it happened years from now.

For me, Calipari leaving Kentucky can be summed up in this analogy: It is as if I tried to break up with my girlfriend but she talked me into staying together. Then three weeks later she broke up with me instead. The breakup is probably the best for everyone and ultimately what I wanted, but it makes me feel icky the way it went down, and I can’t help but feel a little betrayed. Sure, Cal has always spun the truth and is a world-class schmooze, but it still hits harder than Tyrese Maxey when Joel Embiid isn’t playing.

Here’s to a new era.
