Best Case/ Worst Case Scenario for Decision Friday

by:Jay Hochstetler11/14/13
Big 4 Tomorrow is a very strange day. Possibly the biggest basketball decision day in recent memory will occur tomorrow, and all indications are that UK will not be receiving a commitment from any players. UK fans are not going to be stressing as Cliff Alexander, Tyus Jones, and Jahlil Okafor announce tomorrow. The other member of the "Big 4" committing tomorrow, Stanley Johnson, has UK on his list, but its tough to find any recruiting analyst that thinks he puts on a UK hat tomorrow. Even though these players, minus a miracle by Stanley Johnson, will not be selecting Kentucky, their decisions could have serious implications on Kentucky for next season. Let's run through the best, worst, and likely scenarios for tomorrow for UK.   BEST: Jahlil Okafor/Tyus Jones: Kansas Cliff Alexander: Depaul Stanley Johnson: UK This scenario presents the best case for UK to have lesser foes to face next season. Jahlil Okafor and Tyus Jones are choosing between Duke and Kansas tomorrow. While both teams will become extremely talented with the additions of these two players, Kansas appears to not have as much talent returning as Duke will for next season. Wiggins, Selden, Ellis, and Embiid are possible draftees for next season, in my humble educated guessing/opinion. This creates a ton of roster turnover in Lawrence that forces Self to play younger than he normally wishes. Cliff Alexander selecting Depaul (yes it is marginally possible) would make him essentially irrelevant on the national scale and a non-threat to UK's title hopes next season. Finally, Stanley Johnson shocking the world and becoming a Wildcat would obviously be the best situation for Kentucky. He is the centerpiece player that Calipari always wanted and fills the small forward void. LIKELY: Okafor/Jones: Duke Cliff Alexander: Illinois Stanley Johnson: Arizona The likely scenario is based off the schools in the lead for the players on the Crystal Ball of 24/7 Sports. Duke has led for Okafor and Jones for a long time, and the slight buzz for Kansas has not swayed many experts that have called Duke the leader for many months. Cliff Alexander had Kansas in the lead for awhile, but Illini coach John Groce has apparently sold the "Be a local hero" and go-to player pitches enough to make them the slight leader in the opinions of most analysts. Illinois has assembled an excellent class with Leron Black and UofL de-commit Quentin Snyder already joining the Illini for next season. It has been long known that getting Stanley Johnson to leave the West Coast would be difficult. Some thought UK might have a chance if they could recruit him all winter, but his decision to announce now has all signs pointing to Arizona. WORST: Okafor/Jones: Kansas Cliff Alexander: Kansas Stanley Johnson: Arizona If this scenario were to occur, Kansas will have assembled one of the most ridiculous frontcourts in recent memory. Possibly the best college frontcourt since Al Horford and Joakim Noah in my opinion. Cliff Alexander has size and strength that very few power forwards will match next season. Jahlil Okafor is an extremely polished back to the basket seven footer with the strength to back up his skills. Combine this with a savvy point guard like Tyus Jones to facilitate the offense and an athletic, shooting wing in Kelly Oubre, and Bill Self has a team that would be the immediate leaders for a national title. Stanley Johnson at Arizona is also the worst scenario out of his choices because Arizona is an elite team with Johnson where USC would be much like Depaul getting Cliff Alexander. There is no pressure tomorrow Big Blue Nation. Let's just sit back and watch our fellow blue blooded programs squirm in their seats before these exciting announcements.
