Boise State QB transfer a name to watch for Kentucky
As Will Levis’ draft stock continues to soar, it’s not only possible Kentucky will be looking for a new quarterback this offseason, it’s the expectation.
Could current backups Deuce Hogan or Kaiya Sheron make a run for the starting job? Maybe. Will the program explore its options in the transfer portal hoping to find the next Levis — or a go-to option, at minimum? More likely.
In fact, a potential option has already presented itself in Boise State quarterback Hank Bachmeier, who decided to enter the portal Monday.
“Something to watch in the coming months,” KSR’s Matt Jones said of Bachmeier Monday evening. “… Kentucky’s OC Rich Scangarello has worked with Hank Bachmeier (and a number of other college QBs) since they were in High School…that only stopped when he got to UK.”
In fact, Jones said it’s a “high likelihood” Kentucky adds Bachmeier (or another quarterback Scangarello has worked with in the past).
“(Scangarello) knows these guys much better than fans,” Jones added. “If UK gets a transfer 2023 QB, high likelihood it’s one of those kids.”
Bachmeier decided to enter the transfer portal just two days after Boise State fired offensive coordinator Tim Plough. The junior quarterback has started 29 games over four years with the Broncos, racking up over 6,600 yards and 41 touchdowns while completing 61.6 percent of his passes. He’s only thrown 19 interceptions on 870 career passing attempts, compiling a QB rating of 136.6 in that span.
The Murrieta, Calif. native will have two full years of eligibility at his next stop, using this season as a redshirt year after playing just four games.
Bachmeier was a four-star, top-300 recruit out of high school in the class of 2019, ranked No. 254 overall and No. 11 at his position in the On3 Consensus. He originally signed with Boise State over offers from Georgia, Tennessee, Ole Miss, California and Utah, among others.
It’s been a disappointing start for Bachmeier and the Broncos overall in 2022, with the standout quarterback throwing for just 497 yards and six touchdowns to go with three picks in a 2-2 effort as a team. Boise State fell to UTEP by a final score of 27-10 this weekend, a disappointing offensive performance that led to Plough’s firing.
Now, Bachmeier is leaving the program, as well. And early speculation indicates Kentucky could be a potential landing spot.
