Brad Stevens turned down $70 million offer from Indiana, per report

Not even $70 million could get Brad Stevens to go to Indiana. Over the weekend, Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Hoosiers were prepared to offer the Boston Celtics head coach and Indiana native a seven-year, $70 million contract, which would make him the highest-paid coach in college basketball per annual salary. Still, Stevens said no.

How ridiculous is $10 million per year? According to USA Today, John Calipari is currently the highest-paid coach in college basketball, pulling in over $8 million per season, followed by Mike Krzyzewski; in fact, only one NBA coach earns over $10 million per year, San Antonio’s Gregg Popovich ($11 million per season). When Stevens joined the Celtics in 2013, he signed a six-year, $22 million deal, but has since signed two extensions, the details of which are not public.
The Hoosiers ended up hiring Knicks assistant Mike Woodson and earlier today, landed a huge commitment from 2021 guard Tamar Bates, but still…offering your No. 1 choice the biggest deal in college hoops and not even getting a sniff of interest is pretty humiliating; good thing the Hoosiers are used to it.
