Today was defense day at Kentucky’s fall camp, with Brad White, defensive line coach Anwar Stewart, defensive lineman Kahlil Saunders, linebacker Alex Afari, linebacker Landyn Watson, and defensive lineman Mi’Quise Humphrey-Grace chatting with reporters after practice.

Adam Luckett has the in-depth takeaways from the conversations, but linebacker play was one of the main topics White discussed. Kentucky’s defensive coordinator said he showed his unit film of the 2018 and 2021 Kentucky teams as an example of the physicality the staff wants on the field. White also showed them Jelly Roll’s speech to the Tennessee Titans in which the musical artist talked about his inspiring comeback story and the importance of building strong relationships to reach your goals, a message that should resonate with this squad, which features 50 newcomers.

Defensive line depth was another big topic, with Stewart talking about how Stoops and White focused on adding quality players to the line this offseason after injuries struck the unit last year. The line stayed healthy through the spring and so far in camp, so cross your fingers we’ll see the results in the trenches this fall. Saunders, a senior, talked about taking on a leadership role with all the new faces on the line and how eager they are to prove last year was a fluke.

Same goes for the linebackers. Afari is the most well-known name in the room, but Watson, who transferred in from Marshall, has stepped up as a leader so far. Both White and Afari had plenty of praise for Watson’s positive attitude, which is rubbing off on his teammates.
